#SunjuwanTerrorAttack : Here’s a timeline of major fidayeen attacks in Jammu since 2002
JAMMU: Two soldiers were killed and four others, including one of the slain soldier’s daughter, were injured after at least three to four terrorists, suspected to be from the Jaish e Mohammad terror group, stormed into the army camp at Sunjwan in Jammu and Kashmir and opened fire indiscriminately on Saturday.
Anti terror-operations were launched by the security forces and the area was cordoned off as a few terrorists were holed up in the building. As per reports, intelligence inputs had warned an attack on the army or security establishment by Jaish-e-Mohammed in view of the death anniversary of Afzal Guru who was hanged on February 9, 2013.
The ‘fidayeen’ attack on the army camp in Sunjwan is said to be the first such attack in Jammu and Kashmir this year.
In fact, the same army station was targeted by militants in 2003 as well, during which 12 soldiers had got martyred while seven others were injured.
Here is a timeline of the major fidayeen attacks that took place in Jammu in the last few years:
14 May, 2002: 40 persons, mostly family members of soldiers, were killed and 48 others injured in a fidayeen attack on army cantonment in Kaluchak, Jammu.
March 30, 2002: 11 killed, 20 injured in a terrorist attack on Raghunath Mandir in Jammu.
14 May, 2002: 40 persons, mostly family members of soldiers, killed and 48 others injured in a fidayeen attack on army cantonment in Kaluchak, Jammu.
22 July, 2003: A three-member fidayeen suicide squad stormed an army camp, killing eight security force personnel, including a Brigadier. 12 others, including four top Generals, a Brigadier and two Colonels were injured in the attack that took place at village Bangti on the Tanda road in Akhnoor.
March 21, 2015: Two militants killed in a fidayeen attack on Army camp in Samba. Three persons including one civilian, a Major and an Army jawan were injured during the attack.
August 5, 2015 :Two BSF men and one militant were killed in a fidayeen attack near Samroli, close to Udhampur, on Srinagar-Jammu highway
November 29, 2016:Militants entered the premises of 166 army unit stationed at Nagrota-based 16 Corps headquarters on the outskirts of Jammu city, killing 7 soldiers including 2 officers
