The Jammu and Kashmir government has welcomed the Supreme Court direction suspending the ban on beef which was ordered by Jammu and Kashmir High Court. Much to the consternation of a large section of population Education Minister Nayeem Akhtar, who is also the state government spokesman described the order as a great relief to the government.
A bench of J&K High Court last month had ordered that ban on sale
and consumption of Beef in the state should be strictly imposed in the state which sparked unrest among people in Kashmir, a large majority of which opposed the ban on beef. J&K Beef Ban
Akhtar said that order issued by Jammu and Kashmir High Court had lead to anguish but the stay by Supreme Court will lower the temper. He also said that there was need to evolve consensus on the issue given the sensitivity of the matter. He also said that even government with full majorities can not override on matters where sensitivity of large part of population is involved. J&K Beef Ban
The Supreme Court on Monday suspended the order enforcing the beef ban and asked the Chief Justice to set up a three judge bench to decide on two conflicting orders on the issue.
