One day teacher trainings were held for primary science and mathematics teachers of Vidya Bharati run Schools at Ramban, Bharadwah and Jammu (Dashamesh Nagar) from May 19 to 22 in which around fifty teachers participated. Two sessions on science teaching methods and two sessions on mathematics teaching methods were held by the resource person Dr. Lalit Kishore from Jaipur.
In the daily training of four hours, teaching was seen as a combination of content, methodology and instructional material. During the training, the need for vocabulary acquisition, activity-based learning and leaning material in the form of word puzzles, activity sheets, visuals and concept maps was stressed.
According to the organizers of the trainings, Frank Educational Aids, the purpose of the trainings at different locations of Jammu and Kashmir was to improve the quality of teaching of science and mathematics in primary classes by making classroom instruction activity based.
Accordingly, the training was designed in such a way that activities were demonstrated and analyzed to clarify the concept and reinforcing new vocabulary with word puzzles and games. An emphasis was laid on doing at least 10 science activities and 10 math lab activities for each class in a year.
Teachers found the training worthwhile and assured to make a shift towards activity-based teaching of science and mathematics in primary classes.
