A team of young engineers from Sri Mata Vaishnu Devi University (SMVDU), Jammu has done the university as well as the state proud as they stand a chance at winning in the BAJA SAE, an international automotive completion held across the world.

SAE International, initially established as the Society of Automotive Engineers, is a U.S.-based, globally active professional association and standards organization for engineering professionals in various industries. SAE International coordinates the development of technical standards based on best practices identified and described by SAE committees and task forces.

Each year, these design competitions host more than 4,500 students from 500 universities around the world. The SAE Collegiate Design Series competitions include competitions like BAJA SAE, SAE AERO DESIGN, FORMULA SAE, SAE SUPER-MILEAGE and similar events.

BAJA SAE is an intercollegiate design competition run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). Teams of students from universities all over the world design and build single seated off-road cars. The cars all have engines of the same specifications. As of 2014 the engine has been an unmodified Briggs & Stratton Intek 20 single-cylinder with a displacement of 350cc and power output of approximately 10.5 bhp (7.5 kW)

Each year as many as 500 Baja cars are entered in the Baja SAE events across the US and around the world where events are held including India, Brazil, South Africa and Korea.

Established in 2010, SAE BAJA SAE Collegiate Club enabled SMVDU to become an integral part of SAE and first and only college from the state of Jammu and Kashmir taking part in the event.

Team Mechanix, 2013: Entry into BAJA SAE

BAJA 2013 was a four day event, in which the vehicles were tested for 100% rulebook compliance, engine condition and various sample tracks and tough conditions for the first three days.

After completing the On-site inspection, teams adhering to the norms were shortlisted for the endurance run. The policies followed were very strict to ensure the event goes on uninterrupted with proper safety precautions. The event witnessed 120 cars at the event site

Team Mechanix, SMVDU SAE BAJA Team, participated in the prestigious BAJA 2014 conducted by SAE India for the second year. The selection of teams for the endurance race took place after three stages of eliminations, which are based on Virtual presentations, College level technical inspection and On-site technical inspection at NATRAX. This event being the maiden event of the newly formed Team Mechanix,, the team was highly determined to bring in the best results they can and inspire juniors to take up such events with more confidence and a better approach.

EL TORO is the team’s entry to the BAJA SAE. In spite of being the underdogs last time, the uniqueness of their design helped them beat down the top seeds. The concept of giving maximum improvement to last year model and prime attention to Drive Train and stability features were the key points for their selection. Use of transmission in reverse orientation, chain sprocket for vertical engine and drive train orientation were among the innovations they brought to their design, optimization being their slogan.

The experience was completely exhilarating for the team to see so many more vehicles like the one made by us. The varying designs gave a lot of learning for the team members.

Team Mechanix looks forward to establishing a strong foundation and to go ahead with bringing the trend of participating and winning in prestigious SAE related and other automotive events in the National & International Levels. They expect to bring up the name of SMVDU and Jammu to new heights among the youth in the country.
