In a yearly custom, parents of newly born babies gather in Solapur (Maharashtra) to throw their babies from a 50-foot Dargah tower. The babies are thrown onto a sheet held by villagers on the ground. It is believed by these parents that throwing their babies will give them long and healthy lives.
This bizarre ritual is practiced mostly by Muslims but some Hindu families also participate in it. The irony in this bizarre and dangerous baby-tossing ritual is that parents who take part are usually those who have become pregnant after a long time and owe their child to the divine blessings of Baba Umer of this Dargah.
