Jammu, August 4: The incident of the Pulwama attack has been widely reported in the media circles specially since the gunshots fired by the PSO ended up killing a civilian and injuring another. The other side of the story of what Ramban Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Babu Ram had to face is a horrifying tale of his “miraculous escape” following the attack on his official vehicle by violent protesters in Pulwama district of the Kashmir valley on Tuesday night.
The incident occurred at Lethpora, close to the saffron hub of Pampore on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway, when the ADC was on way from Srinagar to Ramban. The mob forced the driver to stop the car and then set it on fire.
“It was a miraculous escape for me. Recalling Tuesday’s incident sends a chill down my spine. The unruly mob intercepted us and attacked our car after it saw the PSO in the vehicle,” the senior officer told The Tribune over phone.
“We could not understand exactly what had happened. Someone from the mob fired on the PSO, who received a bullet injury in the leg. Had he not opened fire on the mob, we would have been lynched,” he said.
He said the PSO opened fire “in self-defence” and they had to take refuge in the CRPF camp nearby.
“We were manhandled and severely beaten up by the protesters before we (ADC, PSO and driver) ran for safety to the CRPF camp nearby. There were hundreds of protesters at the site and the incident was horrifying,” the senior officer said.
“The mob set the official vehicle on fire while we took refuge in the CRPF camp. I am now staying at a safe place,” the ADC said.
