Citizen report by CJ Ashish Kohli
Bus Stand, Airport, Railway Station; these are the places the tourist sees in your city first. Then there is the maxim, first impression is the last impression. Lakhs and Lakhs of tourists, especially from North India who come to Jammu to pay obeisance to Mata Vaishno Devi, prefer coming by buses. There are two reasons behind that. One is Jammu is not Air linked properly with these states and the other is the difficulty in getting reservations on trains.
These tourists find buses an easy option but the moment they land in Jammu what they see is an appalling sight. A pathetic bus stand full of garbage. There is hardly any clean space in the whole bus stand where one can sit and rest for a while. There is always a certain foul smell in the air inside the bus stand.
People in these images have made this space below the flyover, their home. Dirty kids play in garbage. I wonder what first impression my city would leave on a tourist. These people belong to various states in the country and say that they just found this empty space near the bus stand and made it home. Why is no one from the concerned authorities checking this? You can see cops standing in this area all the time. Is there a collusion, an arrangement, made for these people to live freely?
Although Jammu Municipal Corporation had launched ‘Swachh Jammu Abhiyaan’ widely spread across the city but the corporation has somehow failed to clean this part of the city.
The bus stand should be on high priority cleaning list. It is not in the backyard of the city but bang in the centre. Also, beautification of this area requires no hard construction. Just a little cleaning actually.
