Jammu: Two hardcore narcotic smugglers and thieves were arrested with six kg poppy straw, stolen gold worth Rs 10 lakh and three motorcycles in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said on Wednesday.
A police party laid a naka on National Highway and intercepted a car driven by one Jamat, Katra who was also a suspect of various thefts that had taken place in Udhampur areas, an official spokesman here said.
The vehicle was searched and six kg poppy straw was recovered and a case under NDPS Act was registered and investigation started.
According to police, sustained interrogation revealed that the accused had committed a theft in a house in Dandyal area of Udhampur, for which a case had already been registered in Udhampur.
On his disclosure, jewellery worth around Rs 10 lakh was recovered from the possession of the said narcotic smuggler-cum-thief, he added.
The Spokesman said the Udhampur police also arrested another accused Aalam, resident of Jourah Farm, Suchetgarh, Jammu, who was involved in various vehicle theft cases.
On his sustained interrogation and subsequent disclosure, police recovered three motorcycles worth around Rs 2.5 lakh from his possession, he added.
SSP Udhampur Raees Bhat said that Udhampur Police is vigorously working on apprehending various criminals, especially narcotic smugglers, under various provisions of the law, including imposition of the Public Safety Act against narcotic smugglers.
During current month, Udhampur Police registered seven NDPS cases, in which seven accused were arrested and recovered 13 Gram Heroin, 60 Gram Charas and 25.5 kg poppy straw from the possession of these narcotic smugglers so far, he said.
Besides this, one narcotic smuggler was also booked under the Public Safety Act. The Narcotic Cell of Udhampur Police is consistently monitoring and profiling those involved in illegal narcotics trade to root out the menace from society, he added.
