Two IAF commandos martyred, two terrorists killed in J&K’s Bandipora


Srinagar: Two commandos of the Indian Air Force elite Garud commando unit and two terrorists were killed on Wednesday in a fierce encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district.

According to Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Rajesh Kalia, “the two Garud personnel were killed in action while operating with the Army for operational experience and training.” .

Terming the encounter to be an intense operation, the defence spokesman said that the gunfight between the security forces and the terrorists took place in the Hajin area.

Apart from two martyred Garud commandos, at least one more soldier was injured in the encounter.

The gun battle erupted when the security personnel surrounded the Paribal village early on Wednesday following specific inputs about the presence of around eight terrorists inside a house.


Sensing trouble, the hiding terrorists fired at the security forces triggering an encounter in which two of the hiding terrorists were killed with their weapons recovered, said a police official.

He said that the two slain terrorists have been identified as Lashkar-e-Toiba’s Ali Bhai and Nasrullah, both Pakistan nationals.

He said that out of the three soldiers who sustained injuries, two of them later succumbed to their injuries.

“The Chinar Corps commander and all ranks salute the martyrs and offer condolences to the bereaved families,” Kalia added.

The Garud commandos are a special unit of the Indian Air Force with only over a 1,000 commandos.

Meanwhile, search operation was still on in the area to nab or neutralise the remaining terrorists who managed to escape from the encounter site.
