At least two terrorists were killed and two army soldiers injured in an ongoing encounter in Jammu and Kashmir’s Shopian district on Tuesday. Five to six militants were believed to be holed up in a house.
Following a tip-off from the local sources about the presence of terrorists in a house in Shopian, the security forces had launched a cordon and search operation in the area. When they were closing in, the terrorists opened fire on them. Two jawans were injured in the firing.
“He said the search operation turned into an encounter after the militants opened fired on the security forces, who retaliated,” PTI quoted a police officer as saying.
The bodies of the two militants had been recovered by the security forces and their identities were being ascertained.
Four civilian protesters and two troopers of the 44 Rashtriya Rifles, including a junior commissioned officer (JCO) were also injured in the gun battle.
At least four youths were injured in clashes near the encounter site.
Intense clashes erupted near the encounter site and neighbouring areas as people pelted the forces with stones to disrupt the anti-militancy operation.

The civilian protesters were injured as they clashed with the security forces near the gunfight site, sources said.
While the injured soldiers were shifted to Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar, the civilians were shifted to a different hospital, the police officer said.
The gunfight erupted when joint forces of police, Army and CRPF started a cordon and search operation at Kumdalan village of Shopian district, 60 km from here, after a tip-off about the presence of a group of militants in the area.
On hearing militant son’s encounter, father dies of heart attack
The father of one of the militant involved in the Shopian encounter died of cardiac arrest on hearing the news of his son being holed up in a house by the security forces.
Mohammad Ishaq Naiku suffered a massive cardiac arrest when he got a phone call from his son Jeenat Naiku, who had recently joined the militancy, saying that it could be his last call as he was holed up by the security forces.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
