Unique History of Kol Kandoli Mata Temple


Kol Kandoli Mata Temple is a very unique temple which is bang on the old NH-1 passing through Nagrota. Approximately 18 km from Jammu, this temple was supposed to be the first stop in the erstwhile 6 night Mata Vaishno Devi Pilgrimage performed from Jammu.

On a clear night the well lit Mata Vaishno Devi climb can be seen on the slopes of the Trikuta hills. The goddess Maiya is the reigning diety and as the story goes she had given the local girls a bowl (Kol) to drink water, which when shaken (Kandholna) had water gushing out. Hence the name Kol Kandholi.

When travelling from Jammu, you would have to leave the main NH and turn into Nagrota, drive past the Cantonment and in the midst of the Nagrota bazaar is this unique temple.

It is been said that every yatri who is going to perform darshan of Mata Vaishno Devi has to perform prayer at Mata kol Kandoli Nagrota.

Nagrota bazaar is primarily a bazaar for a military town, but there are shops which have local and Kashmiri handicrafts and handloom stuff,
