US loses to Denmark in Algarve Cup
Lisbon: The United States suffered a humiliating defeat as they lost to Denmark 5-3 in their final group game of the Algarve Cup women’s soccer tournament Monday.
This is the first time in 13 years for the Americans to lose consecutive games, also the first time in their team’s 29-year history to concede five goals in a match, reported Xinhua.
The American team, who are winless in the group, will face North Korea in the seventh-place game Wednesday.
Japan came back to beat Sweden 2-1 and reached the final, where they will meet Germany who beat Norway 3-1.
Iceland scored a header in the injury time to hold off China 1-0. They will play against Sweden in the third-place match, while China are to meet Denmark in the fifth-place playoff.
