Mahamaya Temple is counted as one of the many famous tourist spots in Jammu. Situated in the outskirts of the Jammu city, this historical temple has been dedicated to the “Goddess Mahamaya” which is not any famous God of the Hindu Pantheon but a Dogra heroine. The courageous lady gave up her life fighting for her motherland.
According to folklore in this area Mahamaya opposed taking over her motherland by foreign invaders around 14 centuries ago and fiercely fought them. She lost her life for the freedom of her motherland. To this day, people honour her sacrifice. The temple was built to laud her courage and sacrifice. Many people having faith on the “Goddess Mahamaya” and go to the Mahamaya temple for paying obeisance after worshipping “Kali” or “Bawe Wali Mata”
Although covered with forest from all the sides, the temple is which is flocked by devotees almost every day. It is not just a place of worship but people from in and outside Jammu come here to spend some time in the lap here and enjoy the peace that prevails here. It is just 3kms away from the Bahu fort and is constructed over a hill top. Anyone can see the temple from anywhere in Jammu.
