Srinagar, October 12: A women who was raped in 1987 recorded her statement last week in a court in Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Resident of Nadihal area of Bandipora district, the woman now 45 years old was raped when she was 17 on June 3, 1987. She was kidnapped from her home by four men who allegedly took her to a hotel in Srinagar and raped her repeatedly for 12 days.
Shafeeq Ahmad Bhat, who took over as public prosecutor earlier this year, said that he has been making a concerted effort to expedite old cases pending before the court in Bandipora. He said that the delay made to record the victim’s statement for nearly three decades because of the fact that the prime accused of the case was absconding.
He also said that the woman stood by her statement made 28 years ago and recorded her statement in front of Principal District and Sessions Judge Bandipora on October 6.
While two of the accused have died during the course of the trial, the third accused is in custody.
On the last date of hearing (October 6), Public Prosecuter, Bhat moved an application before the court seeking attachment of the property of the accused.
“The court has directed the main accused, through a public notice published in local newspapers, to present himself before the court by or before November 5,” Bhat said.
