Jammu and Kashmir
Bhaderwah, April 30: Massive protests were carried out at Thathri town and a complete shutdown was seen today in Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir against the mysterious death of a woman yesterday.
Hundreds of local residents blocked Batote-Kishtwar to protest against the death of young woman, who was burned to death in mysterious fire yesterday.
The protesters called this incident an inhumane act and therefore demanded that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) be set-up immediately to investigate.
23-year-old Shaista Begum, who was married to Abdul Hamid since two years, was burned to death under suspicious circumstances at her house on Friday afternoon, two days after she lodged a complaint at police station Thathri against her in-laws alleging domestic violence.
Police have registered a case under section 302 RPC and arrested the husband and father-in-law of the deceased.
Hundreds of vehicles got stranded on both sides of the highway town as protesters blocked the road at Thathri since morning demanding an SIT to probe the case.
Top district officials had a tough time to pacify the protesters, mostly women.
It took them six hours to finally open the road.
ASP Bhadarwah Sargun Shukla said that they have already registered a case and an independent SIT has been already been formed for quick disposal of the case.
