Udhampur : Victim of the ever-increasing problem of Unemployment in the State, the farmers, specifically women, from Udhampur have devised a new way to be gainfully employed.
The women here have developed a Cocoon for the Silk production, and this endeavor has earned them Rs 2.5 Crore over a period of 15 days. This feat has pronounced the beginning of a time when people generate services without any major help, making themselves self-reliant. These people have sent out messages to the youth who distance themselves from their land and serve in private jobs outside the state.
The Sericulture Department in Udhampur has been helping these farmers. The cocoons prepared by these people are auctioned at the national level and every year a bazaar is organised with suitable buyers for their products.
In the last 15 days, the farmers have sold about 35,000 Kgs of Cocoon and earned Rs 2.55 Crores. Over three thousand farmers participated in the Bazaar that was organized at the district level. The Mandi (Bazaar) would run till the 22nd of July and more sale is expected. Each day more than a dozen farmers come with their grown cocoons for sale. The situation was unfavorable for the farmers last year, but this time they are more than happy to see their business flourish.
As compared to the last year, the trade is far better this time. The price of Grade 1 Cocoon is Rs 900/kg while a lesser grade is being sold at Rs 728/kg.
Along with the native businessmen, traders from different parts of the country are participating in this commerce festival. More than 60 Silk traders from as far as West Bengal have joined this Bazaar. They have appreciated the efforts of the locals and exclaimed that the silk grown in this part of the country is in high demand throughout.
What is even more interesting, is the fact that more than 50% of the participating cocoon growers are Women who have literally led the way.
