World Bank holds meeting with Jammu and Kashmir State Govt
Financial assistance for rebuilding infrastructure, rehabilitation of people discussed
JAMMU: A meeting was held between the representatives of the State Government and the World Bank team today in which discussions were held on financial support needed for rebuilding the damaged infrastructure and rehabilitation of the people besides help to revive the business community which suffered on account of the recent floods.
The State Government team was headed by Principal Secretary Planning and Development, Mr. B. R. Sharma and the World Bank was led by Mr. Saurabh Dani.
Principal Secretary Finance, Mr. B. B. Vyas after welcoming the World Bank team informed that the State Government is looking forward to the support and assistance from the World Bank to rebuild damaged public and private infrastructure and for rehabilitation of flood affected families.
On the occasion, Commissioner Secretary Revenue, Relief and Rehabilitation, Mr. Vinod Kaul gave a detailed presentation with regard to September 2014 floods. The World Bank team was informed that around 2.54 lakh private structures were damaged during the floods, while as damage to the public infrastructure has been estimated to be more than Rs.6500 crore.
The World Bank team assured full support and assistance to the State Government and informed that it is fully aware of the losses suffered by the people in the State because of the floods. The team said that they will carry out an analysis of the loss assessment within few days which will give them an overall view as to how the State Government can be provided financial support.
They informed that the report shall be submitted to the Government of India, followed by the discussions with the Union Ministry of Finance to finalize the proposal of the State Government. The team assured the State Government that they are ready to support the people who have lost their houses, livelihood etc. and their main focus is on rehabilitation of the affected families, revival of the business activities and also rebuilding of the public infrastructure such as roads, bridges etc.
The team also held sectoral discussions with different administrative secretaries for further details that will help them in preparing the report. The team decided to visit the affected areas of the State and in this regard one team proceeded to Srinagar which will remain stationed there for two to three days and will visit flood affected districts, the other team which is at Jammu shall visit the Districts of Reasi, Udhampur, Poonch, Rajouri and Jammu.
Principal Secretary, Planning and Development, Mr. B. R Sharma assured the World Bank team that full assistance will be provided by the State Government to the team in their preparation and finalizing the report. He also conveyed his gratitude to the team for visiting the State and expected that the visit of the team shall be fruitful and will pave way for rebuilding of public and private infrastructure and for revival of the economy.
