Jammu: The Department of Sociology, University of Jammu today organized a Xth S C Dube Memorial lecture on the topic “Village Marriages: Changing Preferences, Performance and Folk Practices” by Prof. Abha Avasthi, Former Professor and at present Executive Director, Institute of Environmental Studies, Lucknow
Delivering a Key-note address on ‘Village Marriages: Changing Preferences, Performance and Folk Practices’,Prof. Avasthi gave an overview of her study on Sitapur Village in Uttar Pradesh and dwelt upon the institution of Marriage in early 60’s and said a lot of transformation has taken place over the years.
She further said though various social evils like dowry and restriction in inter-caste marriages has not witnessed desirable changes yet social interaction between various cast has grown over the period. This has rekindled hope to overcome various evils. She said that various practices like celebration period of marriage has come down from seven days to two to three days and other practices have also simplified in a big way.
Prof. Abha Avasthi exuded confidence with further expansion of Education, the country side will become prone to adopting positive changes taking place across the country.
She said media has also to play a vital role in generating awareness about the various social evils that can be addressed to in years to come.
Earlier, welcoming the positive impact of advancement on various aspects of life including social behavior, Prof. Mohan Paul Singh Ishar, Vice-Chancellor University of Jammu today cautioned against such influences which are not in consonance with traditional Indian ethos and culture.
In his presidential address Prof. Ishar however said that the negatives of the digital age should not be allowed to intrude into societal evolution. Prof. Ishar further said that the positives should find place in the social order to bring about harmony in human behavior.
“We Should respect our ethics and values while adopting the new changes that are taking place in the society,” he said, adding that the society must switch over to progressive ideas and come out of the rigid preferences that were in vogue for centuries together.
Earlier in her welcome address Prof. Abha Chauhan, Head Department of Sociology gave a brief profile of the Department and the lectures and conferences organised by the department. Dr. Vishav Rakhsha, Assistant Prof. Department of Sociology gave a brief lecture on the life time achievements of Prof. S.C. Dube in whose memory the lecture was organised. Dr. Hema Gandotra, Assistant Prof. Department of Sociology introduced Prof. Abha Avasthi.
Among others present on the occasion were Sh. Jai Kumar Sharma, Special Secretory to Vice-Chancellor, Faculty ,Staff, Scholars and Students of the Department.
