COVID-19 claims life of senior J&K bureaucrat; death toll reaches 377

JAMMU: Senior Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Services officer, among 12 other COVID-19 patients, died on Friday, taking the death toll to 377.

Of the 12 deaths, two were reported from Jammu and 10 from Kashmir.

Meanwhile, 490 new COVID-19 cases were reported from while 375 patients recovered and discharged from across the UT.

Reports said Tasaduq Jeelani, Special Secretary, Social Welfare department, died at Srinagar this evening due to COVID-19.

“I find it difficult to share, our colleague Tasaduq Jeelani has lost the battle against COVID. He had responded well, tested negative too but couldn’t overcome post-COVID complications. May his soul rest in peace,” Deputy Commissioner, Srinagar, Dr Shahid Choudhary tweeted.

On July 24, a police constable donated plasma to Jeelani and he was reported to be recuperating from the disease but lost the battle against COVID-19 today.

Among the 490 new cases, 64 had a travel history and the remaining 347 were reported from Kashmir and 143 from Jammu, thus taking the total caseload in the Jammu and Kashmir to 20,359, of which 7,765 are active cases.

Of the 7,765 active cases, 1,913 are from Jammu and 5,852 from Kashmir.

As per the official bulletin issued on Friday evening, 12,217 have recovered from the virus and 377 deaths – 28 from Jammu division and 349 in Kashmir – have been reported.

Meanwhile, 3,68,806 persons are under surveillance while as many as 2,73,448 have completed the surveillance.
